Club Information

The Washington State University Student Chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is a student group that embodies students with a common interest in aerospace studies. The students range from Freshman to Graduate level and consist mainly, but not solely, of Mechanical Engineering students. The group competes primarily in the AIAA Cessna/ONR Design Build Fly contest, alternating locations annually between Cessna's airport in Wichita ,Kansas and Tucson, Arizona.

The goal is to design, build and fly, from scratch, an electric powered remote control aircraft on a predetermined course, while carrying an assigned payload. The mission specifics change each year. In the past teams have carried a variety of payloads; 4 liters of water, softballs, simulated antennas, sensor packages, etc. This particular competition draws students from universities from around the world, including: Turkey, Sweden, Canada, Israel, etc..

The group has a building shop in Dana 51 that has vacuum bagging equipment, bandsaw, hotwire, and a host of other tools to manufacture RC aircraft.  Despite all of the time and effort that is required, students receive no course credit for the many hours they dedicate to the club. The group flies RC planes for fun at Colfax airport and has trainer aircraft for teaching new pilots.
