MME Degree Programs
Instructions for applying to the MS ME*, MS MSE, and PhD ME are given below.
*Note: There are two separate MS ME programs. One program is offered at the main WSU campus (Pullman) and Tri-Cities branch campus, and the other program is offered at the Vancouver branch campus. Each program has to be applied to separately with separate application material sent to each.
Interdisciplinary Degree Programs
Instructions for applying to the MS Engineering, PhD Engineering Science , and PhD Materials Science are given on their respective web site. Although our department participates in these College of Engineering and Architecture interdisciplinary programs, we do not administer them. A student interested in applying to an interdisciplinary program must apply directly to the office administering the program. Once the application file is complete, the student is then allowed to contact by e-mail the MME faculty member they are interested in working with to inquire if that faculty member is able to take on a new student for the semester applied for. Interested faculty will review the application file in the respective office.
Application deadlines

| If you wish to apply after the priority deadline, please check with us first to determine whether we are still accepting applications. |
Admission Requirements
We adhere to the same admission requirements of the University plus we require GRE scores and we require for PhD applicants a cumulative GPA of 3.4 (on a 4.0 scale) in graduate level courses in the student’s most recent 60 semester hours. A Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited program in mechanical engineering or materials science & engineering provides a good background for our graduate programs. We routinely admit students with bachelor degrees in other engineering disciplines, mathematics, and the physical sciences but the student may be required to make up requisite undergraduate deficiencies.
Financial Support
We have two kinds of financial support available for domestic and international students: a Research Assistantship (RA) and a Teaching Assistantship (TA). While all applicants are automatically considered, applicants to the PhD program are given priority. Most of our assistantships are only available at the main Pullman campus for fulltime students starting in the fall semester. Few assistantships are available for students starting in the spring semester. Most of our assistantships are of the RA type, awarded by individual faculty who have grant and/or contract funding. The number of openings varies from semester to semester and depends on the availability of funding. Competition for such support is very high. The students get an RA by directly contacting the faculty by email after their application file is complete. Our TA positions are awarded to entering or continuing students. There is no formal application process for a TA position, so if you are interested in one please let us know (some students want the teaching experience as part of their career goals). For a student to be considered for an RA or TA, all application material should be submitted by December/early January for the summer or fall semester, or July or early August for the spring semester.
Applying
Admission to the WSU Graduate School is a joint decision between the Dean of the Graduate School and a prospective department such as the School of MME.
STEP 1. Instructions for applying to graduate school at WSU can be found on the Graduate School’s "Apply" web site.. On that site you will also find information on the University’s admission requirements, transcript requirements, the electronic recommendation process, etc.
STEP 2. In addition to the material required by the Graduate School, our department requires the following. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure all application material has been received, and we reserve the right to deny an application because it is not complete.
- Your resume (this can be uploaded to your online application or you can send it as an email attachment to gradapp@mme.wsu.edu).
- Your statement of purpose (the online application includes a text box for you to type this in, or you can send it as an email attachment to gradapp@mme.wsu.edu). The statement should include your engineering experience, your reason for applying to graduate school, your research interests, what research you want to work on while here (if known), and your long-term goals.
- A completed Student Interest Profile form (this form can be downloaded from the online application or from here).
- GRE scores (general test). Our department requires GRE scores for all applicants, even those getting their BS from WSU. We have no minimum score requirement but, since scores are considered in the admission decision, a student should put forth their best effort in getting a good score. Scores should be sent to university code 4705. We reserve the right to deny an application if GRE scores are not received.
- TOEFL scores (international students only). We require the same minimum TOEFL scores as the University (550 paper or 213 computer or 80 internet).
- Since it can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months for GRE and TOEFL scores to arrive from ETS, it is recommended that you send a hard copy of the scores to the Graduate School that can be used as an unofficial copy until the official copy arrives from ETS.
STEP 3. All application material (unless otherwise indicated) should be mailed to the Graduate School office at the address listed on their web site mentioned above. If your references want to send a hard copy of their reference letter rather than using the online form, they are allowed to do that and the letters should be sent to the Graduate School. When the Graduate School receives application material, they scan it into the University system and our department is then able to download what we need. Frequently asked questions about the application process can be found on our Frequently Asked Questions FAQ page and on the Graduate School’s FAQ page.
Admission Status
Due to the large number of applications that we receive, the review process can take from a couple weeks to a couple months. If you plan on coming on your own funding (i.e., you do not need financial support), please let us know and we will attempt to expedite the review of your application. You can check your admission status with our department at any time by sending an e-mail (the preferable method) or by calling. You can check your admission status with the Graduate School (and make sure your application and supplemental materials have been received by them) by clicking this link. Before you can access the system, you need to create a Network ID and for this you will need to know your WSU ID number. If it wasn’t given to you at the time you applied, you can ask our department to provide it to you.
