Application Process

STEP 1. Apply to WSU’s Graduate School
All instructions for applying to graduate school, along with links to the University’s admission requirements, tuition and fees, residency requirements (domestic students only), and ways to finance your education can be found on the Graduate School’s website.

Note: If you are an international student, it is very important that you complete the application using exactly the same name as written on your passport. If you use a different name, other than the complete name, in the same order, as listed on your passport, it may cause a delay in the processing of your application.

STEP 2. Provide Additional Materials to the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering
In addition to what is required by the Graduate School, the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering requires additional materials, which are listed below. These materials can be submitted during the application process, or sent via email to mme.gp@wsu.edu. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure all application material has been received, and we reserve the right to deny an application because it is not complete.

  1. Statement of purpose – This statement should be limited to no more than 500 words, and should only include your research interests, what research you want to work on while here (if known), and your long-term goals.
  2. Student Interest ProfileDownload and complete the Student Interest Profile (PDF).
  3. GRE scores (general test) – MME requires GRE scores of all applicants, even those getting their Bachelor of Science from Washington State University. While there is no minimum score requirement, MME prefers a minimum VR score of 150 and QR score of 165. The scores are considered when making an admission decision and when awarding teaching assistantships. Low GRE scores can result in an application being denied even if a student has a high cumulative GPA. Scores should be sent to university code 4705.
  4. TOEFL or IELTS scores (international students only) – MME requires the same minimum TOEFL or IELTS scores as the University. English proficiency requirements can be found on the Graduate School website. It is recommended that students send an electronic copy or a hard copy of the scores to MME to be used as an unofficial copy until the official copy arrives from the Educational Testing Service (ETS).

All materials required by MME can be sent to:

The letters should be sent to the Graduate School office using the address listed on the above website.

Admission Status

The review process can take a couple weeks to several months. If you plan on coming with your own funding (i.e. you do not need financial support), please let us know and we will attempt to expedite the review of your application.
