In our classrooms and laboratories future engineers study Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering face to face with MME's world class faculty. The educational programs are all capped off with industry sponsored real world design problems, resulting in working prototypes designed and constructed by interdisciplinary teams of student engineers. Students also have the opportunity to work on leading edge research, presenting and publishing research results along with our world class research faculty.

The School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering has an active research faculty, conducting research over a wide range of topics. The School supports the vast majority of graduate students to conduct their research. Many graduate students are also supported in the research Institutes, Laboratories, and Centers associated with the school.

In the 2008 US News and World Report rankings of America's best graduate schools our MSE program ranked 41 and our ME program ranked 56. And ASEE ranks our BS-ME program as number 50 in the top ME programs.

In addition to the required course work, many of the soon to be engineers apply their new knowledge and leadership skills participating in School sponsored real world design and construction projects, competing in world wide competitions, including Formula SAE, Solar Splash, and Design/Build/Fly.
